In a major milestone for diabetes management, India has become one of the first countries globally to introduce Awiqli, the world’s first once-a-week basal insulin approved for clinical use. Developed by Novo Nordisk, this innovative therapy offers a transformative treatment option for adults living with diabetes.

Awiqli contains insulin icodec, a long-acting basal insulin engineered to bind to the blood protein albumin. This unique mechanism allows the medicine to remain in the body longer, extending its action over an entire week to provide steady background support, lower blood sugar levels, and help glucose move efficiently into cells.

Administered via a convenient, pre-filled pen device, the subcutaneous injection is taken on the same day each week in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. For individuals with Type 2 diabetes, Awiqli can be used independently or alongside other diabetes medications. Patients with Type 1 diabetes can also benefit, provided it is paired with short-acting mealtime insulin. By reducing the burden of daily injections.

Awiqli represents a significant leap forward in improving patient adherence and overall quality of life.
