Viatris Inc. (Nasdaq: VTRS) – reported encouraging top-line data from a Phase 3 trial of VR-205, a targeted-release budesonide therapy marketed elsewhere as Tarpeyo and Kinpeygo, in Japanese adults living with primary immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN). The open-label study, conducted across multiple Japanese sites, enrolled 39 participants who took a 16 mg daily dose for nine months, followed by a tapered three-month observation period.
Results showed the treatment met its main goal, cutting geometric mean urine protein-to-creatinine ratio by roughly 34% at nine months versus baseline, a statistically significant outcome. Secondary measures also improved, including kidney filtration rate, creatinine levels, and microscopic blood in urine. No patient advanced to dialysis, transplant, or severe kidney failure during the trial, and tolerability matched prior global findings.
Given Japan’s especially high IgAN burden, Viatris executives called the data a meaningful step toward a disease-modifying option. The company plans to file a Japanese new drug application before 2026 concludes.
