From Laboratory to Patients: ICMR’s Indigenous Biomedical Technologies Move Towards Commercialization

In a significant milestone for India’s biomedical innovation ecosystem, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has formally licensed three indigenous technologies to major pharmaceutical firms. As part of the Medical Innovations Patent Mitra program, this initiative paves the way towards converting public-funded research into affordable medical breakthroughs. By fostering an environment for translating research from laboratories to industries, ICMR is helping achieve the country’s vision of biomedical self-reliance .

SHetA2 is a promising first-in-class therapeutic candidate for HPV-associated Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) developed as part of a collaboration between Dr. Showket Hussain at the ICMR-NICPR and Dr. Doris M. Benbrook at the University of Oklahoma, 

Unlike conventional treatments, which often require surgical intervention, SHetA2 selectively targets HPV-infected precancerous cells while sparing healthy tissue. Thus, this innovation provides women with a better alternative in terms of safety, affordability, and minimal invasiveness. It becomes especially important in low and middle-income countries, as cervical cancer remains one of the greatest public health concerns for such nations.

Two vaccines have been licensed  from the ICMR  labs to Biological E Ltd. to develop vaccines against bacterial enteric diseases that are a significant health challenge for developing countries. Developed by Dr. Santasabuj Das and his team at ICMR-NIRBI, the breakthroughs include:

•Salmonella Typhi Vaccine: This is a protein-based vaccine that targets the pathogen that causes typhoid fever.

•Single-Dose Combination Vaccine: This is a novel multivalent vaccine that is designed to guard against the bacteria Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Paratyphi, and Shigella.

If successfully translated, this multivalent vaccine has the potential to simplify immunisation strategies by providing protection against three major gastrointestinal pathogens through a single intervention.

The technology transfer represents growing maturity of India’s innovation ecosystem. According to Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of ICMR, the end goal is making sure that the research conducted using government funds becomes a reality in the form of healthcare products available to the general public.

Commercial success of biomedical innovations goes far beyond their discovery. Intellectual property protection, regulatory clearance, industry collaboration, large-scale production, and clinical trials are just some of the essential components of such a process. As India’s biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors grow, Medical Innovations Patent Mitra will accelerate translational research, promote affordable healthcare, and foster innovation-driven partnerships between public research institutions and industry. These technologies’ commercialisation could improve patient outcomes and strengthen  India’s  global biomedical innovation hub prominence.
