The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken strict action against manufacturers and sellers of unlicensed and mislabelled cosmetics in the state. Till now FDA has seized a stock of illegal cosmetics and production equipment worth Rs 1 crore 52 lakh 97 thousand 832.
An FDA team raided the premises of M/s Kriya Enterprises in Ghaswala Compound, Andheri East, Mumbai on June 15, 2026. During this inspection, Pega Pig, a hair and skin care product for children, shampoo, lotion, powder, sunscreen and cosmetics for men were found stored for sale. The address of a non-existent manufacturing company was mentioned on the packaging of these products. Also, as the batch number, production date and expiry date were not mentioned on the products, it was clear that these products were wrongly labelled. In this operation, stocks worth about Rs. 29 lakh 84 thousand 439 were seized.
A separate operation conducted in Bhiwandi the FDA foundthat an unlicensed cosmetics manufacturing factory was operating. A raid was conducted on the unlicensed factory, M/s Sigma Lifestyle Pvt. Ltd., located in Harihar Complex on Mankoli Dapode Road in Bhiwandi on June 15, 2026. During this operation, it was found that the owner of the company did not have any valid manufacturing license. There was nonameplate on the factory. In this operation, goods worth Rs 1 crore 23 lakh 13 thousand 393 were seized from this factory.
To mislead the customers on the e-commerce platform, the products were printed with the text ‘Sulphate Free’, ‘Paraben Free’. Also, a fake address in Andheri was mentioned on the finished products. There was no batch number or any legal information on the box. Also, no quality testing laboratory or testing records were found in the factory.
In this case, a case has been registered at Narpoli police station for misleading the customers by printing the address of Andheri on the products without obtaining the necessary manufacturing license.
These inspections and crackdown on illegal comatic products clearly shows the responsiveness of FDA authority and commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s vision to protect the health of the general consumer and ensure the quality of cosmetics available in the market.
