A newly released study by the Gujarat Rajya Institute for Transformation (GRIT) has laid out a strategic vision for positioning Gujarat as India’s foremost biotechnology and biomanufacturing centre by 2030. Titled Gujarat Bio-Economy 2030: Strategic Skill Architecture and Workforce Development, the report ties into the Centre’s BioE3 Policy, which targets a $300 billion national bio-economy this decade, up from roughly $10 billion in 2014.
The report credits Gujarat’s dominance in pharmaceutical output and chemical manufacturing as key advantages, while flagging biopharma, bio-industrial production and bio-agriculture as growth engines. It also points to opportunities in vaccine technology, fermentation-based bio-chemicals, and CRISPR-driven agriculture.
Under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership, officials say the state plans to expand its skilled workforce and align academic curricula with industry needs, reviewing 23 institutions offering biotechnology programmes statewide. The Gujarat State Biotechnology Policy 2022–27 further supports this shift toward innovative biologics and knowledge-driven growth.
