In a significant step toward greener laboratory practices, Merck Group has launched the industry’s first bio-based solvent portfolio designed specifically for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).Developed using renewable feedstocks, the patent-pending range offers a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil-based solvents without compromising analytical performance—an essential requirement in regulated environments such as pharmaceutical quality control and diagnostics.

The portfolio features drop-in replacements for commonly used HPLC solvents, including acetonitrile, methanol, and ethanol. These bio-based variants deliver an average reduction of 25.9% in CO₂ emissions compared to traditional HPLC-grade solvents, supporting the life sciences sector’s push toward lower environmental impact.

HPLC plays a critical role in the separation and quantification of compounds, where solvent purity and consistency directly influence data accuracy. Merck stated that its proprietary manufacturing processes ensure these bio-based solvents meet the same stringent quality and performance standards as conventional options, enabling seamless integration into existing workflows.

The launch expands Merck’s “Greener Alternative Products” portfolio and reflects a broader industry shift toward sustainable innovation. By offering environmentally responsible solutions without requiring changes to established analytical methods, the company aims to help laboratories align with global sustainability goals while maintaining scientific rigor.
