54 State private universities have been identified as defaulters by The University Grants Commission (UGC) across India for failing to comply with mandatory disclosure norms under Section 13 of the UGC Act,1956. According to the commission these institutions violated the Public self-disclosure Guidelines issued in June 2024 and did not upload essential information such as faculty details, academic programmes and infrastructural data on their official websites.

Among all states Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of defaulter universities followed by Gujarat, Sikkim and Uttarakhand. UGC has issued notices to these institutions directing immediate corrective action to ensure transparency and accountability. The move reflects UGC’s continued efforts to strengthen governance and protect student interests by ensuring the accurate, updated and publicly accessible information is maintained by all higher education institutions.
