Cost Reduction in Rare Disease Treatment by New PLI Scheme : A Government Initiative

Addressing its commitment towards affordable healthcare for patients across the nation, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has asked to shift the focus on rare diseases and orphan drugs.

Speaking at the Rare Diseases Conference 2025 in New Delhi, Union Secretary Shri Amit Agrawal emphasized on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for India to pioneer research and development in affordable medicines for global welfare.

Following the same initiative the cost treatment for rare diseases like Gaucher’s disease were reduced from crores to lakhs under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Pharmaceuticals.

The Secretary urged other industries along with CSR support to find innovative pathways to strengthen healthcare industry ensuring equitable access to treatment for all.
