ChrysCapital-backed Novartis India has acquired Pfizer’s Minipress and Minipres trademarks for Rs 1,250 crore, marking a significant expansion of its cardiovascular portfolio. The acquisition, approved by Novartis India’s board on September 7, 2026, involves the acquisition of trademarks registered in India along with certain related intellectual property rights.

Minipress XL, which contains prazosin, is an off-patent therapy primarily used in India for treating hypertension or high blood pressure and managing urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

The brand demonstrates solid market performance: according to IQVIA MAT July 2026 data, Minipress XL recorded revenue of Rs 228.6 crore and delivered a compound annual growth rate of 6.3 percent over the past four years while the category has been growing at 9 per cent CAGR over the same period.

The deal comes strategically as Pfizer discontinues the marketing, distribution and sale of Minipress XL in India from September 7, 2026, following Pfizer Inc’s decision to stop manufacturing the medicine. Pfizer Ltd will receive a lump-sum payment of USD 13.9 million from its US-based parent in connection with the discontinuation.

Novartis India said the acquisition is not a related-party transaction, as Pfizer Inc and Pfizer Products Inc are unrelated to its promoter, promoter group or group companies. This acquisition strengthens Novartis India’s position in cardiovascular therapies while simultaneously providing a therapeutically relevant brand for prostate management, expanding treatment options across patient segments.
