The National Medical Commission has urged medical colleges nationwide to rally behind “Medical Innovations Patent Mitra,” a new ICMR-led programme designed to turn homegrown biomedical research into protected, market-ready technology.
Under the scheme, the Centre will bear the full cost of guiding researchers through patent filing and technology transfer, removing a major financial hurdle that has historically kept promising discoveries confined to laboratories. The push dovetails with the NMC’s broader mission of embedding research culture and innovation within medical training across the country.
Institutions have been directed to spread awareness among faculty, doctors, scholars, and students, while encouraging them to actually put the programme to use rather than merely knowing it exists. Officials believe strong grassroots participation will be the deciding factor in whether India can convert more of its clinical and academic research into tangible healthcare solutions.
