In a landmark development for women’s healthcare, medical experts worldwide have officially proposed renaming Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). The change aims to better represent the condition’s broader hormonal, metabolic, and reproductive impact, moving beyond the long-standing misconception that ovarian cysts are its defining feature.
The recommendation emerged from an international collaboration involving endocrinologists, gynecologists, researchers, and patient advocacy groups. Experts believe the previous terminology often led to confusion, delayed diagnosis, and inadequate treatment for millions of women globally.
PMOS highlights the condition’s connection to insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction, fertility challenges, and long-term cardiovascular risks. Healthcare professionals say the revised terminology could encourage more comprehensive care and improve public awareness around women’s endocrine health.
The transition is expected to gradually influence future clinical guidelines, medical education, and patient communication worldwide, marking a significant step toward more accurate and inclusive healthcare language.
