Fire Breaks Out at Dey’s Medical Unit in Kolkata : 10 Fire Tenders Deployed, No Casualties Reported

A thick black smoke spread rapidly across Bondel Road as fire broke out. Dey’s Medical
medicine plant, South Kolkata, is triggering panic among workers and residents. Ten fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the site following the alert. The fire started at around 4.15 pm. The firefighters responding with urgency quickly contained the fire, even though operations were still underway, and the police managed the locals. Fortunately, due to such quick action no reports of casualties, such as injured or trapped, have been made.

The thick smoke caused a delay in action of firefighters for they were unable to reach the site, and it also caused suffocation among the repair workers. Such fire hazards, in a manufacturing plant situated in the midst of an urbanised population, raises concern regarding the safety of the people.

The facility is said to hold a huge amount of chemicals and other flammables, which particularly caused the delay in fire management. According to local counsellor, the residents have repeatedly raised their concerns regarding the storage of hazardous chemicals in such a densely populated region. This incident has now sharply rekindled such concerns.
