Union Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare, Shri J. P. Nadda, officially released a landmark knowledge paper titled “AI in MedTech: Revolutionizing Healthcare Through Artificial Intelligence”at the 9th Edition of India Medical Device 2026, held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Jointly developed by Praxis Global Alliance and FICCI, the release took place during an event organized by the Department of Pharmaceuticals in association with FICCI, which brought together key government officials, healthcare leaders, and industry stakeholders.

The report explores India’s evolving MedTech landscape and highlights the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in enhancing diagnostics, clinical decision support, operational efficiency, and medical device innovation. While recognizing national foundations such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), the IndiaAI Mission, SAHI, BODH, and the National Medical Devices Policy (2023), the paper emphasizes that moving AI technologies from successful pilot programs into large-scale, routine clinical adoption remains the primary hurdle for the industry.

To address these challenges, the report outlines five core priorities for accelerating responsible AI adoption across the country. It identifies MedTech as India’s most scalable AI opportunity by directly embedding specialist expertise into medical devices. However, it notes that scaling is currently constrained by fragmented health data, evolving regulatory frameworks, and limited reimbursement pathways. Transitioning to routine practice requires addressing three critical ecosystem gaps: creating AI-ready data, implementing predictable lifecycle-based regulations, and establishing value-based procurement mechanisms. AI-enabled diagnostics are projected to lead initial adoption, expanding specialist capabilities to primary and secondary care facilities to bridge healthcare inequities. Ultimately, coordinated action across government agencies, regulators, healthcare providers, industry, and academia will be essential to establish India as a global leader in responsible AI-enabled healthcare.
