Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. has introduced SugammadexInjection 200 mg/2 mL (100 mg/mL) and 500 mg/5 mL (100 mg/mL) single-dose vials, a generic equivalent of Merck’s Bridion®, in the U.S.

Sugammadex Injection (100 mg/mL) provides rapid reversal of neuromuscular blockade induced by rocuronium bromide and vecuronium bromide in adult and pediatric patients (2 years and older) undergoing surgery.

Rocuronium bromide and vecuronium bromide are intermediate-acting, aminosteroidal, non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs). They are primarily used in general anaesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation (a medical procedure in which a doctor places a flexible plastic tube through the mouth or nose and into the windpipe (trachea) to keep the airway open, deliver oxygen, or connect the patient to a breathing machine), provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery, or assist with mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit (ICU). Both medications work by acting as competitive antagonists at the postjunctional nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (specialized protein channels located on the muscle side of the nerve-muscle connection (the neuromuscular junction) that trigger muscle movement when activated by a chemical messenger), located at the neuromuscular junction (motor end-plate).

What is the process? They physically bind to the receptors, preventing acetylcholine (ACh) from binding.

And the result? This blocks the depolarization of the muscle membrane, stopping calcium ion release and preventing muscle contraction.

Looking at the clinical parameters, rocuronium bromide has an onset of action of 45 to 90 seconds (dose-dependent), while vecuronium bromide has an onset of action of 2.5 to 4 minutes. The duration of action of rocuronium bromide is 30 to 40 minutes, whereas vecuronium bromide has a duration of action of 30 to 45 minutes. Both provide an intermediate window suitable for medium-length surgeries.

In contrast, Sugammadex has an exceptionally rapid onset of action, working within 1.5 to 3 minutes to completely reverse muscle paralysis. Its duration of effect is determined by its elimination half-life of approximately 2 hours, during which it remains tightly bound to the paralytic drug until it is safely eliminated through the kidneys.

This launch strengthens Dr. Reddy’s hospital portfolio while helping make high-quality, affordable treatment more accessible to patients.
