India’s flagship health insurance programme, Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), has facilitated 12.69 crore cashless hospitalisations valued at ₹1.92 lakh crore as of June 30, 2026, according to information shared by the government in Parliament.

The scheme extends annual health cover of ₹5 lakh per family to roughly 12 crore low-income households nationwide, representing the poorest 40 percent of the population. Coverage was widened twice in 2024: first to bring in about 37 lakh families of frontline community health workers, and later to include all citizens aged 70 and above — nearly 6 crore people across 4.5 crore families — regardless of income level.

The admissions recorded so far have been processed through a network exceeding 37,000 empanelled public and private hospitals across the country.

Officials pointed to National Health Accounts data for 2022-23 showing that out-of-pocket spending as a share of total health expenditure fell sharply, from 62.6 percent in 2014-15 to 43.4 percent. The government attributes this shift to rising public health investment and the growing reach of state-backed insurance schemes such as AB-PMJAY.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav shared these figures in a written response to the Rajya Sabha.

State-wise data on Ayushman cards issued is available through the National Health Authority’s public dashboard.
