High-level central health teams have arrived in Kozhikode to lead epidemiological investigations following a laboratory-confirmed case of Nipah virus in a 43-year-old individual.
Experts from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are on the ground, collaborating closely with state revenue and district administration officials. The joint team immediately reviewed isolation protocols at the Government Medical College Hospital, where the patient is currently receiving advanced medical management, including specialized monoclonal antibody therapy.
In a reassuring development for public health officials, initial diagnostic tests conducted on the patient’s closest family members have returned negative. While these primary high-risk contacts are clear, health authorities have successfully mapped a contact list of 100 individuals to mitigate any risk of community transmission. Four additional symptomatic individuals have been moved to hospital isolation for preemptive monitoring.
Door-to-door health surveys and environmental surveillance of local fruit bat habitats are underway. The public is advised to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and strictly adhere to health advisories issued by the department.
