Following the official portfolio allocation by Governor R.N. Ravi, Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee has formally assumed charge as the Minister for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the Government of West Bengal. A highly distinguished medical professional and oncologist, Dr. Mukherjee’s appointment marks a pivotal shift toward bringing deep clinical expertise to the state’s highest healthcare office.
Dr. Mukherjee entered the West Bengal Legislative Assembly after securing a decisive victory in the 2026 state elections, winning the Bidhannagar constituency by a significant margin of 37,330 votes. He steps into the cabinet of the newly formed state government under the leadership of Chief Minister SuvenduAdhikari.

Prior to his entry into public service, Dr. Mukherjee built an illustrious career in oncology and medical practice. An alumnus of the prestigious Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata (MBBS, 1992), he went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Calcutta in 1998, followed by a specialization (DM) in Medical Oncology. His professional journey includes serving as a physician at the ChittaranjanNational Cancer Institute (CNCI) and working as a senior consultant oncologist at Manipal Hospital, Kolkata.
The Ministry will focus on enhancing diagnostic facilities, life-saving equipment availability, and trauma care units in block-level and district hospitals to reduce the burden on Kolkata’s tertiary centers. Implementing robust retention and resource-allocation models to ensure qualified medical specialists and essential medicines are consistently available in rural areas.Capitalizing on Dr. Mukherjee’s specialized background to establish decentralized cancer screening and treatment cells across the state. Introduction of automated tracking systems for medical supplies and hospital bed availability to build absolute public trust in state-run health facilities.
Dr. Mukherjee will operate from the state health headquarters at Swasthya Bhawan in Bidhannagar, working alongside Principal Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam, IAS, to implement the incoming administration’s immediate 100-day healthcare roadmaps.
