Newron Pharmaceuticals S.p.A. has confirmed that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed a clinical hold on U.S. clinical trial sites evaluating its investigational drug candidate for schizophrenia. The regulatory action halts ongoing clinical activities across participating U.S. centers while the agency reviews reported adverse safety data.
The FDA’s directive follows emerging clinical safety concerns, including four patient fatalities and clinical reports of irregular heart rhythms (cardiac arrhythmias) among trial participants. The clinical hold specifically impacts the U.S. portion of the late-stage trial pending a comprehensive evaluation of cardiac safety profiles and associated risk factors by regulatory authorities.
Addressing the regulatory review, Dr. Ravi Anand, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Newron Pharmaceuticals, stated:
“Patient safety remains our top priority. We are working closely with the FDA to address the concerns and determine the appropriate next steps.”
Newron affirmed that it is actively collaborating with FDA medical reviewers to assess the clinical data, evaluate potential etiology related to cardiac events, and determine mitigation protocols necessary to support patient safety and establish a pathway for the investigational neuroscience program.
The development highlights heightened regulatory scrutiny surrounding central nervous system (CNS) drug development and underscores the critical necessity of stringent cardiac safety monitoring during late-stage psychiatric clinical evaluations.
