Mankind Pharma is expanding beyond its established pharmaceutical business into advanced cancer treatment through a deal worth approximately ₹511 crore to acquire a majority stake in Belgium-based Armed Cell Therapeutics (ACTx). The transaction gives Mankind a 70% stake in the biotechnology company and marks its entry into the developing field of chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies.

Under the agreement, Mankind will acquire the stake for €48 million (~₹511 crore). The investment is aimed at strengthening its presence in innovative therapies and expanding its oncology portfolio beyond conventional medicines.

The acquisition will be carried out through Mankind Pharma (Netherlands) B.V., its wholly owned subsidiary. The parent company has approved an additional investment of up to €45 million in the subsidiary to facilitate the transaction.

Armed Cell Therapeutics is developing investigational cell therapies targeting cancers with significant unmet medical needs. Its pipeline includes programmes for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a group of cancers originating in the lymphatic system, and small cell lung cancer, an aggressive form of lung cancer.

CAR-T therapy involves modifying a patient’s T cells to recognise and attack cancer cells. The approach has transformed treatment options for certain blood cancers, although its application to solid tumours remains challenging and an active area of research.

The deal signals a strategic shift for Mankind Pharma as it looks to diversify beyond its established generics and consumer healthcare businesses. Access to ACTx’s research platform could provide opportunities to develop differentiated cancer treatments and build a global innovation-led pipeline.

However, CAR-T development carries significant scientific and commercial risks. ACTx’s candidates remain investigational, and their clinical effectiveness, safety, regulatory pathway and eventual commercial potential are yet to be established.
