Bayer announced  that it has gained regulatory approval in China for asundexian, its oral factor XIa (FXIa) inhibitor developed to prevent recurrent ischemic stroke. The regulatory milestone represents a major strategic entry into one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical markets and highlights ongoing innovation in cardiovascular medicine.

The approval is supported by robust clinical data from a late-stage clinical trial evaluating an overall population of 12,327 patients. In the study, recurrent ischemic stroke occurred in 6.2% of patients receiving asundexian, compared with 8.4% in the placebo group. These late-stage clinical findings demonstrate a meaningful reduction in recurrent thrombotic events, providing strong evidence to address an urgent, high-burden clinical need in post-stroke management.

Ischemic stroke represents a leading global cause of long-term disability and mortality, with survivors facing a heightened vulnerability to recurrent events within months of an initial episode. Current secondary prevention strategies often involve careful trade-offs between antithrombotic efficacy and bleeding risks. As an investigational factor XIa inhibitor, asundexian has been designed to optimize targeted vascular protection and mitigate recurrent ischemic risks without disproportionately compromising hemostasis.

Securing approval in China expands patient access to advanced cardiovascular therapies while marking a significant milestone in Bayer’s global commercial portfolio. The decision underscores the value of late-stage clinical evidence in shaping international drug development and addressing unmet public health challenges worldwide.

Bayer remains committed to expanding the global reach of its cardiovascular pipeline, working closely with health authorities and clinical partners to improve secondary stroke outcomes and deliver transformative therapies to patients across global markets.
