Rising Yields Hit Sun Pharma’s Fundraising Drive as Bond Issue Misses ₹10,000 Crore Goal

India’s largest drugmaker by market capitalisation Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has raised ₹7,816 crore (~8000 cr) against its ₹10,000-crore fundraising target, highlighting the growing pressure on corporate borrowers as Indian bond yields climb and investors’ demand for higher returns. The company accepted bids across two bond tranches carrying annual coupon rates of 8.05% and 8.20%.

The first tranche attracted ₹2,003 crore and carries a put option, allowing investors to seek repayment after 17 months. The second tranche raised ₹5,813 crore through a bond with a five-year maturity. Anchor investors, including insurance companies, mutual funds and pension funds, contributed approximately ₹2,100 crore.

The shortfall comes amid rising government and corporate bond yields, which have made investors more cautious about committing funds at predetermined interest rates. India’s 10-year government bond yield moved above 7.4%, while corporate bond yields also hardened, narrowing the additional return available to investors taking corporate credit risk.

The development does not necessarily indicate concerns about Sun Pharma’s creditworthiness. The proposed non-convertible debentures received a AAA/Stable rating from Crisil, reflecting a strong credit profile.

Sun Pharma plans to use the proceeds to partly refinance a bridge loan taken to finance its acquisition of US-based healthcare company Organon & Co. The transaction adds to the company’s financing requirements and makes access to cost-effective capital particularly important.

The fundraising outcome underscores a broader challenge for Indian companies: even highly rated borrowers may face difficulty meeting large debt targets when market yields rise and investors demand better returns.

SBI Capital Markets, Standard Chartered Bank and MUFG Securities India are arrangers of the issuance.
