Avenue Supermarts Ltd., operator of India’s premier value-retail chain DMart, has officially expanded into the retail healthcare sector by launching pharmacy counters within select stores across Mumbai. Operating through its subsidiary, Reflect Healthcare and Retail Private Limited, the initiative offers consumers a flat 20% discount on prescription medicines and daily healthcare products.
By integrating pharmacy counters directly into its existing high-footfall hypermarkets, DMart utilizes a “shop-in-shop” model. This strategy eliminates the heavy real estate and customer acquisition costs typically borne by standalone pharmacy chains, allowing the company to pass operational savings directly to consumers.
The strategic move enables DMart to tap into the high-margin pharmaceutical category where industry operating margins average 25–30%broadening its value retail proposition beyond traditional grocery and household staples.
“DMart has consistently focused on delivering maximum value and savings to everyday consumers,” said a company spokesperson. “Through Reflect Healthcare, we are extending our Everyday Low Price model to essential medicines, helping families manage their healthcare expenses with the same convenience and trust they experience across our stores.”
Each pharmacy counter will maintain an inventory of 4,000 to 5,000 SKUs, spanning prescription drugs, over-the-counter formulations, and wellness products managed by qualified pharmacists. Following its initial rollout in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Avenue Supermarts will assess operational metrics and supply chain performance before considering broader expansion across its nationwide retail footprint.
