TRADE TENSION RISES: TRUMP ANNOUNCES 100% TARRIF ON IMPORTED MEDICINES

On Thursday, 25th of September, 2025, in a rally in Ohio, U.S. president Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 100% tariff on imported medicines of all kinds, emphasising the need for economic independence and bringing back drug manufacturing to the American soil being major driving forces behind such determinant action, triggering concern across pharmaceutical industry.

Though the tariffs are imported globally, most Asian Countries such as India, China and Japan, are the major exporters of Pharmaceutical and generic products to United States. This sudden tariff could potentially lead to exponentially high prices, supply chain disruptions and limited access to health care to the patients in the United States.

Even though health experts and economists have cautioned that these tariffs could have major drawbacks in promoting optimal healthcare to the patients of their country, Trump backed his notion by stating that “flooding” of products into the country seemed unfair. This move has intensified political debates and healthcare sovereignty, drug pricing and is taking a dig at globalization , earning praise and criticism from both political and industrial spectra.
