The Government of West Bengal has officially initiated the process to establish three new Medical Colleges in the districts of Dakshin Dinajpur (Balurghat), Alipurduar, and PaschimBarddhaman. The West Bengal Medical Services Corporation Ltd. (WBMSCL) has issued an official memorandum to the respective Chief Medical Officers of Health (CMOH) to prepare the Detailed Project Reports (DPR).
Each of the proposed medical colleges will feature an annual intake capacity of 100 MBBS students. In compliance with the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) Minimum Standards Guidelines, the infrastructure will incorporate a medical college, attached hostels, and a teaching hospital functioning with a minimum of 420 indoor beds at an average annual occupancy of 80%.
To accelerate project execution, district authorities have been requested to immediately assess land availability within existing hospital campuses. Alternatively, a separate government-owned plot of preferably 20 acres located within 10 km of the hospital campus is being sought. Following the receipt of land data, an engineering team from WBMSCL will conduct site inspections to finalize the campus layouts, marking a significant milestone in expanding the state’s healthcare infrastructure and medical education capacity.
