The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has announced that Health and Physical Education is now a compulsory subject for students in Classes 9 through 12 across all affiliated schools. The mandate, aligned with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE-2023), takes effect from the current academic year.

Issued by CISCE Chief Executive and Secretary Joseph Emmanuel, the directive aims to foster health awareness, wellness, and active lifestyles among secondary and senior secondary students. Under the new framework, student performance will be evaluated through internal assessments integrated into everyday school activities and reflected as grades on official ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12) board results.

“In order to encourage long-term wellness and measure sporting activities, the Council has outlined clear guidelines for schools to structure their physical education assessments,” stated school administrators following the notice. Evaluation will also track student participation in the board’s flagship ‘ACTIVE CISCE’ initiative, ensuring physical fitness becomes an essential pillar of school education.
