Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd  announced that its co-marketed semaglutide brand, Poviztra®, has received regulatory approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for the treatment of non-cirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis.

The expanded indication follows CDSCO’s approval of Novo Nordisk’s ‘Wegovy’ for MASH treatment in India, making semaglutide the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist cleared globally and nationally for this condition alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Poviztra® is manufactured and imported from Novo Nordisk’s European facility and contains innovator rDNA-origin semaglutide.

MASH is a serious, progressive liver disease caused by excess fat accumulation leading to chronic inflammation, for which therapeutic options have historically been limited.

“This approval for MASH marks a critical milestone for patients affected by an underdiagnosed liver condition,” said Satish Mehta, CEO & Managing Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals. “We are committed to partnering with healthcare professionals to enhance early diagnosis and broaden access to evidence-based therapies across India.”
